Born in Belfast, Mackinnon grew up in Dublin. She moved to London to study at the Slade from 1918 to 1924. Her work is characterised by delicate colour harmonies, lyrical brushwork, and an ability to convey atmosphere, often painting rural scenes in France, Italy, and the British Isles. She exhibited at the Royal Academy, the New English Art Club, and the Paris Salon; she also held solo exhibitions in London and abroad, and her work entered both private and public collections. Painting consistently throughout her life, Mackinnon’s art reflects both a poetic sensibility and a quiet strength, securing her place among notable women artists of her era.
