Richard Smith
b.1931

Smith’s concern for pop imagery in some ways parallels the work of Jasper Johns....both have fed from commercial art emblems and simple objects, and then made something painterly and refined with what they have selected. He has concentrated for some time on boxes, cartons, even cigarette packages, to set against the square or rectangle of the canvas. The comments on perspective which followed soon flowed into a series of experiments with asymmetrically shaped canvases, and eventually these became three-dimensional
