Very little is known of the artist Tony Sarg. He designed many posters in the years leading up to the Great War of 1914-18, after which he worked from the scene. In a very short period, he produced some of London Transport's most memorable images, and was clearly a great illustrator.
This superb drawing captures the rain sodden atmosphere of a Saturday afternoon game, complete with cameramen, fruitsellers, programme sellers, journalists near the corner flag. On the pitch itself, tackles are flying in from all directions in the penalty area, while the referee and linesman try to retain order. |
