A very rare image of a named footballer in his club strip. Ginger made this print specifically for the 1953 Football & the Fine Arts Exhibition. It was printed in a edition of five or six, with all the other prints in private collections. In 1996, she signed this copy, which had been in a draw since the 1950s.
Phyllis Ginger was a painter, printmaker and illustrator. Trained at Richmond School of Art 1932-35, she then attended the Central School of Art 1937-39. During the war, she was an unofficial war artist, later taking part in the Pilgrim Trust project of Recording Britain, and was commissioned to illustrate a number of books, including her own children's books. She became a member of the Royal Watercolour Society in 1956. |
