French figurative painter, also an influential teacher and writer on art. Born and studied in Bordeaux, he moved to Paris in 1905, and held his first solo exhibition in 1910. Involved in many of the important French art movements, such as Cubism and Fauvism, Lhote is considered one of the key figures in modern art, which was centred in Paris until after the second world war. He won many major prizes, and is represented in all the world's major museums. |
