This is a preliminary study for Ayrton's important 1953 painting Arsenal v. Aston Villa (PFA collection). The painting was one of the highlights of the major Football and the Fine Arts Arts Council exhibition. It was executed on the spot and captures the athletic, almost sculptural form and movement of the players. The match was played at Higbury in December 1952, with Arsenal winning 3-1.
